01What drill size for an M6 tap?+−
A 5.0 mm drill for M6 × 1.0 (about 77% thread). In stainless or hardened steel use 5.3 mm for a lighter thread. The closest inch bit is 13/64" (5.16 mm), which still gives a usable thread.
02What wrench fits an M8 bolt?+−
A 13 mm wrench fits both ISO and DIN M8 hex heads and nuts. The socket head cap screw takes a 6 mm hex key.
03Is M6 the same as 1/4"?+−
No. M6 is 6.00 mm and 1/4" is 6.35 mm. Pitches differ too (1.0 mm against 20 or 28 TPI). An M6 screw will feel loose in a 1/4" hole and will cross-thread a 1/4"-20 nut.
04Coarse or fine metric?+−
Coarse is the default and what you will find in most hardware. Fine pitches appear in automotive, hydraulic and precision work where thin walls, fine adjustment or vibration resistance matter.
05What hex key fits an M5 cap screw?+−
A 4 mm key for an ISO 4762 socket head cap screw. M5 button and flat heads take 3 mm, and M5 set screws take 2.5 mm.
06What does property class 8.8 mean?+−
The first number times 100 is the minimum tensile strength in MPa (800). The second is the ratio of yield to tensile (0.8). So 8.8 yields at about 640 MPa. Class 10.9 is stronger: 1,000 MPa tensile, 900 MPa yield.
07What clearance hole for an M4 screw?+−
4.3 mm for a close fit and 4.5 mm for a medium fit, per ISO 273. The tap drill for M4 × 0.7 is 3.3 mm.
08What washer fits an M8 bolt?+−
An ISO 7089 M8 washer: 8.4 mm inside, 16 mm outside, 1.6 mm thick.
09What tap drill for M10 × 1.5?+−
An 8.5 mm drill for about 77% thread, or 8.9 mm for a lighter thread in stainless.
